Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed worldwide. It aims to reduce localized fat deposits or sculpt certain areas of the body and face that are resistant to diet or exercise.

The procedure involves the use of special numbing fluid (tumescent) which are administered via a long thin but blunt infiltrator. The fluid softens the targeted fats, anesthetizes the area, and constricts the surrounding blood vessels thereby reducing or controlling the bleeding when the surgeon does the fat suctioning.

After a few minutes of waiting, the softened fats are aspirated or sucked out using special blunt hollow tubes or cannulas (typically 2-4mm) connected by a hose to a suctioning device. This can be manually operated with a syringe or with a suction machine. Recent technologies have also incorporated the use of ultrasonic waves, mechanical vibrations, and laser into the liposuction procedure to facilitate easier and less traumatic fat removal.

Ideal candidates for liposuction surgery are adults in good physical and psychological health. There should be no other medical conditions present, as these will increase the risk of intra- and post-surgery complications. Patients on steroids, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bleeding drugs are advised not to proceed with liposuction.

When you consider having a liposuction, an initial consultation by the surgeon is required.  Problem areas will be assessed. Options, risks, limitations, and expectations on the outcome will be discussed.  Depending on the number of areas to be treated and the type of anesthesia to be used, the surgeon might require you to have some basic blood tests with some chest x-ray and ECG.

Liposuction surgery is performed under local anesthesia (for 1 area only), or under sedation or general anesthesia (for 2 or more areas). One or two areas may take 1-2 hours of operative time and an additional hour for every area added or even longer, as changing patient’s position in the operating table entails additional surgery time.

Illustrated below are common areas treated by liposuction. In order to achieve good result, your surgeon will need to move you in different positions during the procedure to be able to optimize fat removal.
